most of the 204 million barrels of beer made in America last year came from two monstrous brewing conglomerates

looks to me that barrel production is fairly flat since 1990.

97% of the breweries in operation are small, independently owned craft breweries

this means that 97% of the breweries make for jack shit in production.

underdogs are gaining steam

how so? independents brewers had a huge jump in the 90s and steady increase through 2000 to 2010 but production is flat. this means that we have a larger diversity of beer but no one is drinking it.
when 97% cannot even own a measurable percentage of the market I would say we are a long ways away from the golden age of american beer.
